Road to Hana

Hana, Maui, HI

For a true Maui adventure, drive the famed Road to Hana, a winding, twisting road that hugs the mountainous north side of the island, with more than 600 curves and 54 one-lane bridges. You won’t even need to get out of the car to see waterfalls, but short hikes provide more waterfalls and natural swimming pools. The drive will take you to Waianapanapa State Park, where you can walk on a black sand beach, swim in cave pools and walk through lava tubes. It also continues beyond Hana to Kipahulu Valley, where seven pools and a 90-foot waterfall await.

For the truly adventurous, continue the drive along the unpaved roads and enter Maui’s desert for views of dried-up canyons and cattle ranches overlooking the blue ocean. It’s surreal to experience the many climate zones of Maui in just one day.

Tips: Bring snacks and drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, comfortable shoes, swimsuits and towels. For those who get car sick easily, you may want to bring Dramamine, as some say the curvy roads can become a bit too much. Leave early in the morning with a full tank of gas to beat the crowds and the sunset (you do not want to be on this road in the dark), and expect to spend the entire day doing the drive. Purchase a Road to Hana CD from your hotel or a gas station for a driving guide to the many stops and mile markers.
