Overview

This slice of Charleston opulence opened in the summer 2016 and delivers over-the-top luxury for every age. Yet it’s more than just a five-star hotel. John Dewberry – an Atlanta developer – bought an old Federal building that started life back in 1965. Some in Charleston called the old building “ugly” and suggested someone make an appointment with the wrecking ball, but nobody counted on John Dewberry’s interest in historic preservation.

Dewberry transformed the ’60s style seven-story building into a gorgeous 155-room hotel sitting just across the street from quintessential Charleston-excitement.

The hotel is decked in modern furnishings with a sprinkle of Jackie Kennedy-style. All rooms get a view of Marion Square, the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge, the Charleston Harbor, Wragg Square and old-world, charming church steeples. Choose between a king or two queens, or request a suite. All rooms come with in-room bars, marble bathrooms with free-standing tubs, flat-screens, and Wi-Fi. Some rooms have four-poster beds, living rooms, dining areas and/or floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms don’t come with a mini-fridge, but a simple request to the staff and your honor bar fridge can be emptied prior to your arrival at no charge. Rooms don’t come with a coffee machine, but a lavish coffee bar is available to guests at no charge every morning from 7 to 10 a.m.)

The property has a lobby-level lounge that serves small plates. The onsite restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The spa’s menu is extensive offering numerous treatments. No pool on site, but the beautiful beaches are a quick drive away. (Folly Beach is particularly family-wonderful.) Parking is valet only with a charge.

The Dewberry is 1.2-miles to the Waterfront Park, 0.8-miles to the Charleston City Market, 11-miles to family-friendly Folly Beach, 0.7-mile to the South Carolina Aquarium, 0.3-mile to The Children’s Museum of the Low country, 0.6-mile to Fort Sumter Tours (where Civil War’s first shots were fired), 5.8-miles to Wild Blue Ropes Adventure Park (amazing ropes course for kids and adults of all ages and skill-level).

Beautifully and tastefully appointed hotel with amazing service and friendly staff. The rooftop bar has great views of the city and the Living Room bar downstairs is just wonderful and has a jazz band on weekend nights. amenities include complimentary daily newspapers, car service, bike loaners, and nightly ice/water, and extra towels if needed. Service is really what puts this place over the top. The staff is proactively helpful and friendly.
