Overview

The Kantishna Roadhouse is an all-inclusive resort located 90 miles inside Denali National Park. Its rustic log cabins are built on the site of an old gold mining camp from the early 1900s, and you can still see original buildings from that time on the property. Your cabin, however, will be much newer, and includes two queen beds and a private bathroom. The room amenities are simple because the resort runs on generator power. With no TV, phone service, or internet, it’s a great time to unplug for a few days. All of your meals and snacks are included with your stay. There’s also free coffee, tea and cocoa available all day. After dinner, parents can enjoy an after dinner drink in the Roadhouse saloon while the kids run off to play in the game room.

You can reach the Kantishna Roadhouse on the private shuttle that picks up guests at the Denali Park Train Depot. It’s a four- to five-hour trip, depending on how many times the bus stops for wildlife and breaks. Otherwise, no cars are allowed that far into the park. There are dozens of activities available free to guests, including gold panning, fly fishing, wildlife drives and guided nature hikes. Kids will love riding the free mountain bikes along old mining roads to the pristine Wonder Lake. For any of your daily excursions, the dining staff will prepare sack lunches for your family. At the end of the day, mom and dad can treat themselves to a massage from the in-house therapist for a reasonable price. With its stunningly remote location and wealth of family-friendly activities, the Kantishna Roadhouse is a great place to spend your Alaska family vacation.

Great escape in the wild

by BlueRidgeTourist

We spent four nights in September and had a wonderful time. We saw most wildlife on the bus tour in and out, and also saw Denali, which is frequently covered in clouds. Many people spend just two nights, but that offers little time to partake in hikes, evening talks, trips to Wonder Lake, gold planning, etc. With four evenings, we felt immersed in the wild of western Denali. We even awoke early to look for the aurora. Missed it, but the stars were amazing. The best reason to stay here is the staff. The bus driver, hiking guide, and guides to Wonder Lake and Jane Quigley were wonderful. They are very knowledgeable and passionate. We also loved the sled dog presentation and demo. My wife saw it 3 times! We also read past reviews that food was mediocre. We thought the food was fresh and quite good, and served promptly. No complaints. We have stayed at many remote eco lodges and our cabin was very comfortable with a heater, plenty of hot water, and screens covering windows when you want fresh air. We love September because you have plenty of daylight, fewer mosquitoes, and reduced crowds. This is the place to unplug the electronic devices and immerse yourself in the beauty of Denali National Park. We would definitely return.

One of the best place to spend some time!!!

The moment I booked the room it was great experience. Emmit was able to keep our request to give us 2 queen bed and one extra bed cabin. The driver Drew was driving on an unpaved road and talking all the time. Very tough job!!!! We saw 15 bears including one black bear on our way in and 6 bears on our way out. Everybody in the lodge are very dedicated and hard worker. Karen and Jenny in the kitchen, Emily, Nicholas, Brian and Melisa were great guides and their presentation and telling the story about this area was great. We did all the activities and they even took us to mirror lake by car and the view was spectacular!!!!! Food was amazing!!! It is great to have that great food in a wilderness ..... I do not know why people complain about the food. The amount and taste is excellent. The only thing I did not like is the family style dinner where we wasted more than half the food that was served. Last day that is why we ordered less and did not waste any food at all!!! We also got gold during gold panning and loved the souvenir that we received!!!! I would ask them to make some magnets and pins as Souvenirs!!! Love love love the experiences!!!
