I had a quick business trip to Winston-Salem to meet with one of the local hospitals. We arrived at the hotel around 1:30pm, turned our car over to valet and went inside to check in. I placed my drivers license and credit card on the counter and asked if we can check in. The goal was to get my wife settled in and I would go to my 4:00 meeting. My card and DL was pushed back and was told we don't allow checkins til 4:00. I explained I had a meeting at 4:00 and need to change clothes and was there anyway we can get around this time barrier. I was told again, we don't accept checkins til 4:00. Here is the issue, there was nobody there. There were bags sitting behind the desk and we were told we could leave our bags but I needed the bags to change and get myself ready for a meeting. So, we finally left and I ended up changing clothes in the hospital bathroom to get myself presentable. So after my long meeting and getting back to the hotel, the type of room we had reserved through American Express travel was sold out. The young lady at this point was trying her best to be apologetic and get us another room that was comparable. My wife doesn't get to go on many trips with me and this was disappointing. Its a beautiful hotel but the mid-day staff needs some coaching on service.
What a beautiful hotel in an old building in downtown Winston-Salem! The rooms are large with gorgeous high ceilings and large windows. Valet parking is an option, but there is a parking garage across the street that charges $12/full day for parking. The beds were very comfortable and the space was perfect for our family of 4 (two teenage boys and my husband and me). The rooms are quiet - we didn't hear any other guests while we were there. The free wine happy hour is always a treat at a Kimpton!! One minus to our whole stay - train tracks run almost directly behind the hotel. The train comes through town on a regular schedule - including at 5 a.m. during the week (we stayed on a Monday; I'm not sure if the schedule is different on the weekend); that was a startling wake-up call. Otherwise our stay was fantastic and if in the Winston-Salem area again, we will most definitely stay in this hotel again!
