Brought my daughter for a ‘Spa Day’ to celebrate her birthday. Although most staff were friendly, a few were rude upon asking questions. The facilities are small but have that ‘brand new’ appeal and what could be a lovely, enjoyable experience was spoilt by:
1. I paid over £200 for myself and my daughter to experience a spa ‘day’ - this is only 3hours. Instead of really relaxing we were constantly clock watching. 3 hours are not enough to use the facilities to their fullest. Low wood stated that this was due to only allowing a certain number of people in the spa as to not overcrowd, (completely understandable) but, why not extend for at least a further hour (preferably more!) really put a dampener on our ‘day’ - we could have spent an hour relaxing on the day beds alone & the weather was beautiful but we were unable to relax in the sun by the outdoor pool due to the time constraint! Which leads me on to number 2..
2. Guests were leaving towels on the beds next to the pool as if to reserve their beds. Beds are very limited anyway and we spent over 30 minutes waiting for one, once again, wary of the time! Some guests were coming back to their beds but it became apparent in the time elapsed that the other guests had in-fact just discarded their used towels on said beds and myself and my daughter could have had one each. I also managed to get glass in my foot by the pool and spent 5 minutes digging it out ... nice ! Also, the main road between Bowness & Ambleside runs right in front of the hotel, spa & outdoor pool. Completely spoils the aesthetic and doesn’t sound great either.
3. Afternoon tea or a two-course meal were included in our spa ‘day’ (makes me chuckle !). Made our way to the blue smoke hungry and looking forward to our afternoon tea with lake views to be literally hidden away and forgotten about in a tiny annexe ! We were the only ones. Menus stacked on a table opposite, rips in the chairs & dirt marks on the walls. The restaurant wasn’t that busy for us to sit in the main part. Felt as though our afternoon tea was just an add on and so were we !
The afternoon tea itself was absolutely abysmal. The sandwiches were that stale (2 fingers each!!) and the few cakes we received were that tasteless (mostly just filled up with cream..) that I had to order my daughter a portion of chips - to which I was reminded twice that I had to pay £2.50 for them, whilst my daughter was eating them? Of course we would have paid for them ! !
My husband collected us and remarked he wouldn’t mind a stay, I informed him of our experience and told him we wouldn’t be bothering. That there are much nicer and attentive hotels with spa facilities within bowness and Windermere and that low wood bay’s standards did no where near reflect their costs.
We were given a room where someone had been smoking. It was not pleasant but we accepted it
On checking out I explained this to the receptionist and suggested the room be given a more thorough clean for the benefit of the next guest.
The response got was little better than. "mind your own business"
