Terrible customer service & total ripoff

by Lsh216

We had been really excited about staying at Meadowood -- having been to the restaurant a few years ago, we were keen to get a chance to spend more time at what is admittedly a beautiful property.
We booked a night through Hotels.com and selected an option where we could pay at the hotel. There was no cancellation policy cited and we were never told we had to cancel by a certain date.
Unfortunately, the devastating fires in the region precluded us from making the trip. We called Meadowood and told them we needed to cancel. They told us we were not within the window and would have to call Hotels.com as it was not up to them, it was up to Hotels.com because we should have cancelled four days sooner. I was surprised because it was the first I had ever heard regarding a required cancel-by date.
We called Hotels.com, and they called Meadowood multiple times. Despite what Meadowood had told us on the phone, it was MEADOWOOD--not Hotels.com--who controlled the cancellation and MEADOWOOD who ultimately charged us $1,000 for a hotel room we could not use for circumstances beyond our control.
Be very careful about EVER making reservations here--they clearly care far more about making any buck that they can than building any sort of customer loyalty.

Just okay

There is certainly nothing wrong with Meadowood. It's a nice place and I'm reviewing it based on a 5 star hotel... ie it's just okay in relation to other 5 star places. The restaurant on property (not the super pricey one) is kinda dingy and food not that great. The location is pretty, but you feel more like you're in Tahoe than Napa... which, again is fine, but not what I was looking for. Service was great.
