New York’s famed Waldorf Astoria hotel will shut its doors in 2017 as it begins a massive, 3-year renovation.

The Park Avenue hotel, which first opened in 1931 near Grand Central Station in Midtown East, will receive a complete overhaul of its nearly 1,500 rooms. Most rooms will be converted into condos, with just 300 to 500 reported to remain open for guests as new luxury suites.

Designs and official plans for the Waldorf Astoria New York have not yet been submitted, but the proposed renovations are expected to cost $1 billion.
