Following the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, President Obama recently announced the newest park to join the National Park system. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument becomes the 413th member of America’s national parks.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument joins the parks following the donation of 87,500 acres, along with a $20-million endowment to supplement funds for initial park operational needs and infrastructure development. The new park is located in Millinocket, Maine, and overlooks Katahdin, Maine’s highest mountain and a terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The lands were donated by Rachel Quimby and her family and is valued at more than $60 million.
