The OAAS Convention

by Randy C

We attended the OAAS Convention here. The service was exceptional, the meals were delicious, the staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. There is a Starbucks in the lobby for a quick coffee, or the Crave Restaurant for excellent meals at reasonable prices.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, the meeting rooms had good acoustics, and there was lots of space for the tradeshow. Very convenient location on Hyw 7, close to the 401, with lots of FREE parking! There is over 100 restaurants within a 10 minute walk of the hotel. Next year's convention has already been booked.

Good value, hot tub subpar

by 2kidswilltravel37

This one night stay was booked with the attached Best Western as it was one of the few hotels in the area to meet my criteria of both included breakfast and a pool with hot tub. At check in, we were upgraded to Sheraton while still honoring the included breakfast of the BW. I am assuming this was because of renovations at BW. The two properties share breakfast at the Crave restaurant off the Sheraton lobby.

Our room was older and not one of the newly renovated but perfectly fine relative to my expectations. I liked that there was an easy chair and ottoman, and a magnifying mirror in the bathroom. It takes about 20 seconds for a channel to change so channel surfing isn't a good option. We were on the 3rd floor looking directly on the roof, but most other rooms would have been better. The in room coffee was Starbucks. Our room had a door adjoining another room which carried conversation from the other room very clearly.

The pool experience is always a major criteria for us in booking and reviewing. The Sheraton has its own indoor pool with a sauna (no hot tub) and you can use the extensive facilities of the Parkway health club (open to public) in the basement of the BW, which was a major factor in booking the BW. It has a large indoor pool with natural light that opens to a patio in summer, as well as a hot tub. The men's change room has a hot tub. The female change room has a steam room. It all sounds great but it was a weird experience and we left within 5 minutes of arriving, despite it being the main reason for staying here. It felt very low end and not nice. The hot tub in both the pool area and men's room was lukewarm (not even warm) and both were incredibly small, seating 4 people. The hot tub was also patched up. When we entered, I had asked if my teen would be able to use the gym facilities alone and the answer was no because they are licensed and she pointed to an unmanned bar to the side of the reception of the gym. This was not like a commercial restaurant but like a gazebo in an empty room and it didn't appear set up to serve.

So we trekked the maze back to the Sheraton pool which was nicely heated but no towels and the knob for the sauna was broken and we couldn't turn it manually. Others had already called for towels and we called for the sauna. The towels took ages to arrive and my kids didn't want to go in unless they knew they had a towel or sauna to dry off in so it was a lot of waiting. They eventually got the sauna working with a wrench but the knob was still missing so it would mean calling someone with a wrench again next time, which led us to not return in the evening as we had planned. The other strange thing was there was a door leading outside, where I could see a backyard-type hot tub (with cover) but the area leading to outside had construction materials in it and was blocked off.

The breakfast was outstanding for an included breakfast. The dining area is a real restaurant where they seat you and serve you coffee and juice. There were lots of choices (waffles, pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, many types of fruit, sliced meat and cheese, yogurt, bakery items) and I enjoyed trying the chinese additions (congee, fried tofu, chow mein). The booth tables were very high relative to the seat height.

The location was convenient and we took advantage of the chinese restaurants across the street. There is also a large selection of chain restaurants 1 minute drive away. The staff we encountered were all good. There are many hotels in the area to choose from. This stay was good for value for the room and breakfast but not worth it in the end because of the pool and hot tub disappointment, and I would have gone elsewhere had I known.
