Very Nice, But Some Issues...

by Dlit99

Well, overall my wife and I liked this hotel that is right on the lake. The room, while small, had an amazing view and the food was, in a word, incredible. However, we also had a few issues with this hotel.

One, even though they claim to be 1.5 hours from the airport, our driver (who worked for the hotel) took some crazy route that took well over 2 hours. At least the car he picked us up in was comfortable!

After the long drive, we checked in and spoke to the staff about what activities we could do that day or tomorrow (our only full day there). Despite being told there would be many activities to chose from, the reality was there was literally almost NO CHOICE at all. On the day we arrived, because it was already late afternoon (after the 2+ hour drive), the only options were to walk around the lake and/or the sunset bonfire (which we did and was quite nice). While the board indicated there were a few options for our one full day at the lake (still far less than in the brochure), the staff made it clear that our only real option was a day long trip to the 2 Islands since that was what ever other guest was doing the next day. So, despite wanting to do only one of the islands, we were forced to do them both.

This wouldn't have been so bad except the 2nd (non-floating) island had some very steep climbing which my wife and I found extremely challenging. At one point, the guide got so far ahead of us (and a few others) that we lost site of him and were confused about what direction to even head for lunch! What sort of guide abandons a portion of the their group?! This was very disappointing. Anyway, the guide did provide some interesting information on the boat rides as well as on the islands.

So, overall it was a mixed bag. While the room was fine (nothing incredible but adequate with a great view) and the food was wonderful (all meals), the choice of activities was a bit disappointing; especially since prior to going there we had been provided with multiple pages of potential activities (many which were not available).

A newly built lakeside hotel at edge of a village away from tourist areas

This is such a well run hotel. Everything works like clockwork with such friendly and well trained staff and excellent food and drinks. The room was lovely with a sunrise view and enormous bed. Bathroom facilities were top notch.
I needed oxygen when I arrived after a long drive at very high altitude and it was given to me in the room free of charge without any fuss.
The hotel offers free trips and talks which are all led by very knowledgeable guides. The trip to see the floating islands is very interesting, the rowing boat into the reed beds is good and the star gazing talk was very informative.
The chef knows his stuff and breakfasts were excellent with several options of healthy food and afternoon teas are provided. We had two stormy nights and log fires were lit in the lounger which made it very cosy. It was a wonderful experience, even the very early morning start to catch the train to Cusco from Puno station was made enjoyable.
