Dirty, Room falling apart & Terrible service

by Debra C

In summary: My husband & I were very displeased with this hotel and the service we received. I was personally offended by the Assistant Manager, Tenicia Billups who I found extremely sexist towards me.

Here’s the facts:Hotel: Towne Place Suites by Marriot
checked in on Sat. 7/27—then At 12:30 AM since I couldn’t sleep, I went to front desk & said shower is dirty: I showed proof of hair in shower- on soap dish spot by showing the pic I had taken with my cell. I also told clerk refrigerator is turning on & off, also the people upstairs sound like elephants because the ceiling/wall are too thin also every time they open or shut the door, closet door, bathroom door it’s squeaks and each door needs oiled/ greased. The clerk asked if I wanted to move to a different room. I said no because my husband is sleeping right now. Then the clerk handed me a business card of the manager: Montreal Jackson.

on Sun, July 28 husband & I ate breakfast in the hotel room using the frypan. We did not take a shower in the hotel room because the hotel shower it was still dirty then at approximately 7 or 7:30 AM we went to the front desk & spoke to the clerk who said she was the manager. Tenicia Billups was her ID. My husband handed her a list* (see below) of the several things that were wrong with the room. Also I said the shower is dirty & asked for cleaning service. She asked if we wanted to change rooms. I said no; my husband said no. She said she would get the cleaning staff to clean the room. We left to take the dog to the local dog park. When we returned the room was not cleaned yet. Then we went to church. I return to the hotel room at 1:30 PM. The room was still not cleaned. I walked to the front desk with my dog. The assistant general manager Ms Billups was still there at the front desk. I asked her when the room was going to be cleaned because I want the bathroom shower to be cleaned. She said she tried to call me several times. I asked her what phone she dialed cause my cell phone number was on file. She said she called the phone in the hotel room. I said I was out of the room until now. I repeated I wanted the bathroom in the room cleaned since it was dirty since we arrived. She said she would get the staff immediately and I told her I will be sitting here in the lobby so that my dog and I will be out of the way for the cleaning person and also she had said that maintenance Will go into the room about the refrigerator. I waited in the lobby until 3:30 PM & made several business calls. During those 2 hours several cleaning staff went through the lobby each 1 was pushing a cleaning cart: each cart made a lot of noise. I had to continually tell the person on the phone to please excuse me because I’m in a loud public place. The cleaning staff, each time looked at me, did not apologize for the noise it was making yet knew that I was there. This happened at least 2 times. I believe with three different cleaning staff. At 3:30 pm I noticed that the assistant manager was at the front desk. I got off the phone and I asked if the room has been cleaned. She said yes it has been cleaned. she said she “comp’ed” me for the first night because of the problems & handed me a computer generated piece of paper indicating such. It was not on letterhead. It appeared to be from an old fashion DOS system. She asked if my room was a Deluxe Standard King. I said I don’t know. She asked me if it was OK if she could see the room I said yes. We walked back to the room, she looked briefly inside & said it was a Standard King. I asked if maintenance had fixed the fridge & other things that my husband had written down. She said no that Maint can’t get a new refrigerator in the room but can’t do so until Monday. She asked again if I wanted a different rom. I said I wouldn’t mind but my husband is pretty stubborn when he makes up his mind & I believe he wants this room for the view: I said I will call him right now. He answered the phone. I told him about the refrigerator issue & asked if he wants a new room. He said No! I got off the phone & told Ms. Billups. She left. That evening my husband came to the hotel room & took a shower. We then realized that the fry pan was not cleaned & Also the vacuum was not used on the carpet. We went to bed both exhausted.

on Mon July 29 At approx 7:30 AMI I walked to front desk: spoke to Ms Billups telling her fry pan was dirty & room never vacuumed since we got there. She acted surprised & said “oh you wanted that clean also?I thought you just wanted the bathroom cleaned!” (I had assumed the room would be cleaned before we checked into the room & everyday of our stay.) Then I said there must be a miscommunication, the room was not cleaned & my husband wants to fry pan cleaned and the carpet vacuumed. She loudly said “yes there’a a miscommunication!” It appeared she was inferring that I was not communicating clearly with her. I then asked do you still have the list that my husband gave you of all the things that are wrong in the room? She looked around her desk, found it and showed it to me yes and I have maintenance tickets for these items. then I asked for the room to be cleaned :frypan to be cleaned and the Carpet vacuumed. She said she would get cleaning to take care of it . I said I’m going out right now & if you need me please call me on my cell phone number. I double checked with her to make sure she had my cell phone number. I watched her write my cell number down on a piece of paper even though this was the same phone number that was on the computer file for the room. I explained to her please call me on my cell phone number if for any reason you might need me because I will not be in the room. My husband had already gone to work. I left with my dog and called my husband on the phone. He then explained that he had stopped by the Front desk, spoke to her and had asked when the room was going to be clean because the frying pan was never cleaned and the carpet was never vacuumed. He said he was told that she didn’t know (when the room would be cleaned) & the rooms that people are checking out of will be done first starting about 3 o’clock and then the others will be done after that. She could not give an exact time but sometime before 5 PM. I came back to the room at approximately 2:30 PM. I walked into the room and noticed that the frypan was cleaned, The bed was made, the bathroom was cleaned. but the vacuum had not been run on the carpet. I walked to the front desk and the assistant manager, Ms. Billups, was there. I told her that the room appeared to be cleaned because the bathroom was cleaned but the carpet was never vacuumed. I asked for the carpet to be vacuumed. I also said the frypan is cleaned and the bed was made & looked wonderful. She said she would call the Executive Housekeeping ( Gracie Franklin). She was dialing the phone as I left the lobby with my dog to go volunteer at the senior center. I returned to the room at 4 PM. It appeared the carpet had now been vacuumed. At 4:15 pm I realize the fridge still had all my food inside, so it didn’t seem like a new refrigerator. I walked to front desk & asked the young man about the refrigerator. He said the maintenance man had been in the room & repaired it. He asked if it was making a noise anymore. I said no. I also let him know that the Asst Manager was aware of our cleaning issue & the carpet is now vacuumed.

On Tues July 30: we left hotel at approx 8 am; came back at approx 10 am: still none of rest of maintenance issues fixed or replaced: since checkout is by noon we quickly ate lunch inside the hotel. This being our check out date, we were in the middle of packing our belongings when we heard a knock on the door. Cleaning lady came at 11:30 am- we asked for 1 minute, quickly cleared out of hotel: I went to front desk where Asst Manager: Ms Billups checked me out, didn’t ask me how my stay was but then hand my invoice/ receipt to me. which was on letterhead. As of time of check out, the maintenance issues haven’t not been done: see below

Pleasant Enough

Stayed a few nights for business. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Always a smile and greeting. Complementary food and drink each evening. I tried it once and found it ok but a great option since I had a long day and didn’t want to go out. Breakfast is very good. Room was comfortable and with the exception of a little mold on the tub, was very clean. Would stay there again.
