The Marquis has six restaurants on property. For breakfast, you can grab coffee and pastries at Starbucks or hit the Encore Restaurant on the 8th floor for an a la carte menu that includes such specialties as lox, eggs, and onions scrambled in an omelette or a simple bagel and cream cheese. There's also a full buffet featuring all the usual fixings, like eggs, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, cereals, and muffins. A continental option is available as well.

The Encore Restaurant, Katen Sushi Bar, and Broadway Lounge are all open for lunch or dinner. I prefer the latter, with its view overlooking Times Square and its family-friendly menu. There are crispy flatbread pizzas, chicken quesadillas, Caesar salads, reubens, and angus beef burgers. Save room for the New York cheesecake.

By far, the most impressive restaurant is The View on the 47th floor. Savor the best of New York state fare, like pan seared Hudson Valley fois gras, scallops, filet mignon, and an apple tart dessert as you take in the glorious views of Manhattan in the only revolving restaurant in town. The four course prix-fixe menu starts at $69.95 per person. The children might want to sit in the View's lounge and grab the cheese and dessert buffet for $17.95. Mom and dad can join them as they sip on wine or margaritas.

Now let's exit the hotel and hit the city. The popular Carmine's restaurant, known for their extra-large Italian entrees to share, is on 44th Street. Another Italian favorite is Ralph's, on the corner of 56th Street and Ninth Avenue. The kid-friendly restaurant has anchored the neighborhood for years, offering affordable mom-and-pop Italian food (pasta dishes starts at the low price of $8.95), with excellent fried calamari and a house salad of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, crisp lettuce and olives, doused in oil and vinegar.

Carnegie Deli and their hefty and heavenly pastrami on rye or corned beef on rye sandwiches is on 7th Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets. Also try the matzoh ball soup and the potato pancakes. Nearby, on Broadway and 51st Street, Ellen's Stardust Diner, kids will get a kick out of the singing waiters. My favorite bagel store is H&H, across from Zabar's on Broadway and 79th Street. Then there's Tavern on the Green in Central Park, the perfect spot for a Sunday Brunch, and a meal in Chinatown. Thankfully New York is a great walking city as well as a mecca for exceptional food. So instead of hailing that cab, stroll with the kids to the next stop and you won't gain as much weight.
