True to the name, this family-friendly motel and cottage resort had its start as a small carriage inn built in 1848. There’s even still a secret room on the property that originally hid escaped slaves on the Underground Railway (the current owners are still keeping its location secret, though). Now, the resort is a modest motel a few blocks walk from Lake Winnipesaukee that’s well set up for families. Units come with picnic tables and barbecues, and the property features a playground, game room and pool.

Rooms are spacious and individually decorated with simple furniture — queen and king-sized beds, reclining chairs, dark wooden dressers, and small sinks and vanities. All rooms come equipped with a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and air conditioner, and some also feature kitchenettes with small stovetop and oven. Efficiencies and cottages on the property sleep up to eight people. In addition to the lake, the resort is a short walking distance from the honkytonk attractions of Weirs Beach, including a drive-in theater, mini-golf course and an ice cream shop.
