The Scottish capital receives hordes of visitors descending upon the European city for its renowned festivals, none more popular than the Military Tattoo, which takes place every August, the busiest time of year to visit. With parades, events and exhibits, the crowds gather at Edinburgh Castle, which installs bleacher seats to accommodate more onlookers, and the city displays its best in bagpipers, TK and fireworks, the later of which shuts down the historical old portion of the old city as shop owners and patrons gather in the streets to catch the show.

Other noteworthy festivals occurring in August include the Edinburgh Art Festival, the Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Other festivals throughout the year include Scottish International Storytelling Festival, International Science Festival and Edinburgh’s New Year’s celebration, Hogmanay.
