Located south of downtown Bellingham, along the rocky coast of Bellingham Bay near historic Fairhaven Washington, the Chrysalis Inn & Spa is a luxury destination hotel for discerning families looking to bathe in the natural beauty of their Pacific Northwest surroundings while on vacation. This sophisticated hotel and spa is best suited for small families with only one or two children, as the only rooms that can accommodate families are the luxury king or luxury corner suite, each featuring down comforters, mini-refrigerator, DVD player, iPod dock, gas fireplace, comfortable robes and a window seat with a full view of the bay. The lack of resort fees, free Wi-Fi and free parking make this high-end hotel more affordable, but there’s still a premium placed on this kind of waterfront luxury in the scenic northwest.

It feels redundant because others have said it and it must be that every night is different and people have very different tolerances! There is a passenger train that zips by. Those were rare, quick and fairly quiet. BUT the two nights we were there, I am not even exaggerating, there were COAL TRAINS, passing for 7 minutes at a time every two hours (10pm, 12am, 2am, 4am and 6am!) with squeaky wheels and occasional horns a blaring - ear plugs were no defense for those. It was so absurd, we actually laughed from disbelief.
It's also clear from the review responses that the management expects guests to have known about the noise issue. But we were given this trip as a gift by a relative and had called for the room over the phone. We had not seen the reviews about the trains and were taken completely by surprise, especially because the hotel is so so so lovely in every other way.
The worst part was the staff acting as if they had no idea what we were talking about - we felt like we were in the Twilight Zone. No apology for the experience which was not "charming", as if we were the first to complain, and no offer of . . . something . . . a some aromatherapy gift bag to aid with relaxation? A free drink at the bar? Something, other than a blank stare.
2 stars instead of 1 because everything is amazing but don't stay here if you are worried about getting uninterrupted sleep -which I feel like is a basic function of a hotel!
And the hotel should provide the same warning the website does to guests making reservations over the phone.
The room was lovely. It had a window seat overlooking the bay that we really enjoyed. The hotel is located close to Fairhaven, a nice short walk, and just a little bit further away is Bellingham. The trains are a bit loud but that is not the hotel's fault. The restaurant is adequate.
