You won’t find true luxury at Crown City Inn & Bistro, a motel in Coronado, Calif., but you will find everything that’s luxurious for families: comfortable accommodations, reasonable rates, onsite dining (with some — if not the — area’s best breakfast options), and special perks for kids.
Crown City Inn offers several room variations, though families typically stay in one of two: Two Double Rooms or Deluxe Rooms. Two Double Rooms have two double beds, mini fridges, microwaves and coffeemakers, while many Deluxe Rooms have queen beds, pullout sofas, spa tub and shower combinations, and of course, added space. Most Deluxe Rooms also have mini fridges, microwaves and coffeemakers, though some have full kitchens. Cribs and rollaway beds are available upon request.
Upon arrival, kids receive a welcome amenity, and the hotel offers a cupboard full of games, crayons, books, beach toys and even bikes. Pets are welcome, too, and are treated with their own welcome package, which includes toys, treats and a list of local pet-friendly parks, restaurants and beaches. Food and water dishes are also provided.
And whether you choose to stay at the motel or not, you must visit its onsite restaurant, The Crown Bistro, for breakfast, which includes everything from lemon poppy seed pancakes to traditional omelettes. Breakfast is also the restaurant’s most kid-friendly meal — your picky eaters likely won’t find anything they like on the lunch and dinner menus, other than burgers.

This is a lovely quaint hotel. Check In is 24 hours. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We opted to stay in Coronado instead of downtown when visiting San Diego. It was only a short drive to San Diego Zoo. The hotel has a nice little restaurant out the front with a lovely outdoor garden dining area. If you're thinking about visiting San Diego, we would recommend considering this hotel. While in Coronado, we visited Del beach, Hotel Del Coronado (outside our budget for accommodation) and Coronado Ferry landing dining precinct. If you are into cycling, they have free bikes to use. If you are arriving late on a Sunday night, ensure to eat before coming to the Island as nothing is open. The McDonalds that is open is only accessible for defence staff inside the military base.
We stayed here for two nights during the week and would definitely stay here again.
Parking - We were able to get a parking spot around the back of the hotel. The car parking spots in the main courtyard were all taken when we arrived. This was at 6:30pm mid week. It is worth checking with reception if there are any parking spots before driving into the courtyard as the space to turn round in the court yard is very small. We never used our car on the island as there were lots of public transport options.
Pool - This was a bit smaller than we had imagined it would be from the photos but looked inviting. We didn’t have time to try it.
Reception - They were helpful. Tea, coffee and biscuits are always available in reception. We booked through booking.com and it mentioned that we could hire the bikes for free. The was a handy way to explore the area.
Room - We had a big room with two double beds on the ground floor with plenty of space for our suitcases. It had nice shutters on the windows and a big mirror in the room. The air conditioning unit was quite noisy so we turned it off when we went to sleep. The bathroom was very nice bathroom with a big shower. Our bed was comfy bed. We experienced no issues from road noise even though our room was very close to the road. There was some noise on the ceiling from people in the room above but not enough to cause any problems sleeping.
Location - The hotel is located very close to Centennial Park. Also bus numbers 901 and 904 go from literally outside the hotel. Also it is worth knowing the 904 bus is free in the summer (May 24th to September 2nd). The 904 travels along Orange Ave, to the Community Center, to City Hall on Glorietta Bay and to the Bayfront and Ferry Landing.
Breakfast - The Crown City Inn Bistro is next door to the hotel. It is not actually part of the hotel but a great place to go for breakfast and quite handy. It seemed quite popular with people who were not staying in the hotel too.
