Very Pleasant Stay with Great Service, but needs some upgrades

by IJFK

I only stayed in this hotel because it's part of the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts and I'm glad I did. The location, next to Union Square, is obviously good and I didn't have any noise issues in my room on the 7th floor.

The staff in this hotel was fantastic, compliments to all of them. Any issue I had was addressed immediately, Honeylen in particular was great.

While everything in my room worked well, the hotel does need some upgrades and there were a few hiccups during my stay.

The gym is probably the worst of it, as it's just a converted patio with a tent on top. If you've ever wondered what type of equipment people used to work out in the 90s then go there On top of that it's incredibly hot in there as there is no A/C. It's almost unbearable. The two times I worked out in there I was alone, and I'm not surprised.

A couple of times during my stay I had to wait minutes for the elevators to come, at one point I just walked (which is fine), but an upgraded elevator system that is more efficient would probably help.

Breakfast was nice but took a really long time to arrive, both mornings I was there. What I ordered wasn't very complicated (avocado toast) and maybe I'm impatient, but it got to a point where it was getting a bit annoying.

Despite those issues my stay was still pleasant, relaxing and uncomplicated.

Hotel needs a renovation

Good:
Excellent location, really central and close to a communications hub.
Comfortable bedding.
Personnel was rather welcoming and helpful.

Bad:
Styling / decoration is completely outdated, gave a feel of the 90's (I might be generous here). First impression (cramped and run-down lobby) completely underwhelming, was expecting a much more modern and luxurious atmosphere. Got a similar feel in the room.
Wanted to treat my wife to romantic and luxurious experience and made a unusual financial effort for that, turned out to be an embarrassment. I can't believe the reviews and comments this hotel is getting, either these are fabricated or people are completely unaware of modern hospitality standards.
