Overview

This luxurious, but affordable, hotel has some of the most home-like rooms in town. You’ll feel more than comfortable in their stylishly decorated King Suite, which features a king bed in a separate room, and a queen sofa sleeper in another. You’ll also have space for a crib or rollaway. The suite includes the usual refrigerator, dishwasher, and stovetop. There’s a cozy outdoor pool, complete with spurting fountains, and a nice patio for relaxing on a lounge chair. Other amenities of the hotel include free Wi-Fi, fitness center, laundry service, an indoor hot tub, and a free continental breakfast.

The Wingate hotel is located near a busy highway in Abilene’s main shopping district. Nearby are every chain store known to man, as well as the large Abilene Mall. You don’t have to go far to see the real Abilene, however, as the historic downtown district is a mere 5 miles from your hotel. There, you’ll find some of the most family-friendly museums in the state, including the amazing Frontier Texas, which tells the history of Texas through fun, interactive exhibits that are “hosted” by holographic figures from history. After several hours inside, your family will be clamoring for the great outdoors, so head to the Abilene Zoo for quality time with the exotic animals. For even more exciting history, visit Buffalo Gap Historic Village, an easy 20-minute drive from your hotel. It will feel good to get out of the city and into the rural countryside for awhile. There’s a lot to see and do in Abilene, and the Wingate by Wyndham is a great base of operations for your family vacation to the area.

A sad little hotel

by yankeegirl66

This is a Wyndham property.

Booked a 12 day stay here. On day number three and I’m already looking for other places. It’s ACU homecoming weekend so there is nothing else in town till Sunday.

First- staff here is lovely. Polite, friendly- very welcoming. Decidedly over tattooed.... but nice.

The room is a sad testimony of what was probably a beauty in its day... high ceilings, wood trim, big window. But this place hasn’t been treated well or updated in ages-

Stained dirty carpet (see pic)to the point where I will not walk barefoot on it. Had not been vacuumed as evidenced by the papers and plastic on the floor.

Stained dirty and torn curtains that don’t keep the light out- I had to pin them shut.

I stayed in room 100 which is first floor- window opened but had no screen or security bar on it. Locks were easily jiggled loose- went to Home Depot for a stick.

Stained decorative blanket on the bed.(see pic) Stained chair upholstery so bad I went to Walmart and bought cheap sheets to throw over them.
Bed linens looked clean but blanket duvet was thin- off to Walmart for a cheap quilt set.
Pillows smelled suspiciously like someone else’s perfume... more Walmart sheets.
Bed was “ok”. Not horrible to sleep on.

Bathroom door is broken- drags on the floor and won’t stay open.
Tub is rusted both inside and out- hair in it when I checked in so I cleaned it. Grout on the tile wall is dirty also.

Fridge wasn’t on when I got there so I turned it on... knob was broken. Had to use tweezers to turn it on.

A/c works well, however when it’s getting ready to turn the cooling portion on it makes an annoying clicking noise- woke me up.

Ironing board- no iron

Plenty of lights most do not work with wall switches so you have to go around and turn them on by hand- not a big deal but worth mentioning

Bathroom toiletries smell cheap and overpowering.

Breakfast the first day was what you would expect at this price point. Both hot and cold options but nothing to write home about.

Despite that fact that day temps here are still in the 70’s and 80’s , the pool area was “closed for the season” . Looking at it, it looks like it had not been cleaned in some time.

Fitness room not operational and looks like work was started there and abandoned.
Lots of work vans parked here but no work going on.

Sundries area doesn’t carry Coke products- only Pepsi (pet peeve of mine) and very limited snacks. Nothing worth buying . Water was $2.

Closest exterior door to me is supposed to be locked all the time for safety- which it is- but it doesn’t close all the way unless you pull it.

Oh- and because it’s homecoming weekend and all hotels are sold out, my booking.com price of $70 per night turns into $118 on Friday night. This place isn’t worth that on any night.

Positives? Great staff. Truly lovely people.
Great location for me.
Well lit parking lot.

That’s about it.

I stayed at a Wyndham property once before in the 1990’s. Had nearly the same experience. Figured I’d give them a go again. Never- repeat never will I stay at a Wyndham property again.

Don’t go

by Chase S

I without a doubt do not advise staying there! Really had a miserable couple days dealing with room keys that wouldn’t open the door one day took half an hour to get it opened then the next night sat there over an hour waiting for front desk who act like they knew nothing about the hotel and then after an hour got in and couldn’t give is a key so couldn’t leave and lock the door cause then would have had to sit through the night mare once again! Then told me I could get a refund went to check in and rang bell multiple times no one came then tried calling while I was standing there twice and still no show so just left! Of course with no refund! So needless to say o will never stay there again! All I do is travel and that was definitely one of the worst services I’ve ever felt with!
