This was our first trip to Mexico. Anticipation was high and we were excited. The travel day from Vancouver was long, and by the time we got to the Mayan Palace resort we were especially tired. But all in all, the travel day was seamless; our more +flights were on time, and except for the exceptionally long wait at the Cancun customs, I can't complain.

Our driver accidentally dropped us off at the Grand Mayan instead of the Mayan Palace, but the front dest agent kindly checked us in. Soon after we were approached by another lady with a map and lots of information (we assumed a timeshare rep and we were right). Our friends who had lent us their timeshare had warned us of all the timeshare pestering. In fact, that is the only complaint I have about the hotel. We were call several times (and woken up twice) by this lady until my husband had to firmly refuse to attend the presentation and after that we weren't bothered again.

Our condo had a kitchen so we happily ate breakfast and some lunches in our room. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed except a toaster. The room was well kept and with the extra bedroom it was lots big for our family of 4. The maid did our dishes for us on the second-last morning, and that was an unexpected treat.

The beach was rocky and not really swimmable, but my explorer son spent lots of time checking out the creatures in the tide pools. If you walk about 15 minutes down the coast there is a nice sandy beach with a lifeguard. We started swimming and he recommended we move a little further down the beach due to the undertow. We obliged and it was much better. There were lots of little white fish swimming around us which was quite fun.

All in all I would definitely recommend Mayan Palace. The staff were friendly and helpful, the grounds and rooms well kept. The pool was massive. It was a great home-base for our trip to the Mayan Riviera.
