Pilot's House
We had our first and best dinner at the resort's Pilot House as the sun was setting over an island and ribbons of orange, yellow, and red lit up the sky. The food only served to enhance the ambience. We ordered the traditional New England clambake that started with chowder, a light and tasty mix of clams, broth and potatoes. Then it was time to put on the bibs because that crustacean that made Maine famous was about to arrive. The lobster meat was tender and easy to get out of the shell, obviously caught that morning. It was served with corn on the cob. Our daughter still doesn't have a taste yet for lobster, so she dug into the fish and chips. There's also mac and cheese on the menu for younger kids.
To top it off, we had a sublime piece of blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream a la mode. I'm sure those blueberries were also found up the road. A seagull named Frank, according to our waiter who sees him every night, was peering into the second-story window with envy. Beyond him, a boy was casting his fishing line on the docks to fully embody the Rockwellesque appeal of Sebasco.
Ledges
For casual dining on property, catch the breeze and harbor, as well as the same fresh, delicious seafood found in the Pilot House at the resort's pub-style restaurant. Micro-brewed ales and spirits are par for the course, and a great place to grab a cold one once the kids are tucked in.
North Creek Farm
24 Sebasco Road, 207-389-1341
Off-property, we loved the nearby North Creek Farm for lunch. Order freshly made soups like gazpacho, veggie wraps created from the just-picked vegetables found at this working farm, and sandwiches like BLTs at the counter. Then sit down on picnic tables in the back, surrounded by roses, greenhouses, an old barn and chickens running wild. It's a bucolic slice of Maine that you won't want to leave. They also sell fresh produce, cheeses and items like soaps and socks, all from Maine.
Anna's Water Edge
75 Black's Landing Road, 207-389-1803
Another night, we had dinner down by shores at Anna's Water's Edge. This is another great seafood spot, known for its heaping bowls of steamers, fresh fish like haddock, and lightly breaded onion rings.
Duckfat
43 Middle Street, 207-774-8080
If you happen to be flying in and out of Portland or driving through, make a pitstop for lunch at our favorite spot in town, Duckfat. They're known for their fries soaked in, you guessed it, duck fat. Dip it in a little truffle ketchup, washed down with a rich mocha shake, and you're in high cal heaven. For healthy eaters, there are salads, soups and a good tuna melt.
