Walk upstairs from the large lobby to find the Hourglass bar and Solstice Restaurant. Hourglass is a cozy place to grab one of Vermont's microbrewed ales and a sampling of the state's artisanal cheeses. Then move on to the restaurant for an apple and cranberry salad, mussels and entrees of Maine lobster risotto or rack of lamb. There's also a kid's menu with requisite mac and cheese and burgers.
Outside of the hotel, Stowe is blessed with an excellent family-friendly dining scene. For breakfast, it's hard to top the Dutch Pancake Cafe at the Gray Fox Inn, offering more than 80 different types of pancakes. Another one of our favorites is the Blond Vermonter pizza, topped with Vermont cheddar, apples, and ham at Pie in the Sky. The kids can also have pizza at the Matterhorn, while Mom and Dad dig into the fresh sushi. Gracie's has moved once again in 2009, but still serves a heaping platter of nachos, overflowing salads, salmon, steaks, chile, and the best burgers in town.
If you can snag a babysitter at the hotel, dine at Blue Moon Cafe, one of the finest restaurants in the state. Entrees change nightly but expect freshly made soups, mahi mahi with a black bean mango sauce, strip steak, and an extensive wine list. For dessert, head to Laughing Moon Chocolates. The turtle chocolates, made with homemade caramel, are heavenly.
