Located in downtown San Jose, this Costa Rican hotel was recently renovated. It is conveniently located on Avenida Central, a pedestrian street that offers numerous shopping and dining opportunities to families. The guestrooms and suites feature free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a mini bar and are carpet free. Ideally, the two-bedroom family suites feature one bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with two double beds. The living room features two sofas and there is a television in all three rooms. There are several onsite dining options including a restaurant, cafe and pizzeria too.

It was a nice Hotel until the incompetency of the front desk caused us to miss our flight! I asked for a shuttle at 8:00. The driver was there at 7:30 waiting for us. I asked about him and the young lady at the desk said to wait in the lobby. The driver came in looking for us and she did not let us know (10 feet away). We asked again and were told the same thing. Finally the driver asked a bell hop to look for us and he found us. She knew we were waiting on our shuttle and were getting nervous about the time and she did absolutely nothing. We missed our flight by 3minutes before they shut the gate! I called over 6 times to jave our room comped since we have to stay 2 extra days till the next flight. They were very rude and offered zero soutions. Had they did thier job like they were suposed to we wouldnt be out $500 to change our tickets, and another $300 for a hotel room at a place that actually does thier job! Not to mention thier bar shuts doqn at 9:50p.m., and the indoor coffee stand dosent open till after noon??? This place would be great if they had competent staff!! Even the driver could not believe thier incompetence!!! I will never stay here again! And not one call back after trying to resolve this 8 times. Kept hearing "we'll call you back" over and over again while me, my wife, and two young girls were stuck in SJO airport! Bad form on thier part, and they will not own up to thier mistakes!!!
We spent two nights at the Balmoral Hotel, and on the whole we were quite satisfied with what we got. Our room was spacious, clean and quiet, the staff were friendly, and the location - right on Avenida Central - was very convenient for visiting the sights of San José.
What we found less than perfect was the reception - the people there were friendly and helpful, but we regularly had to wait some time for luggage left in storage. Breakfast was a big disappointment: the coffee was hardly drinkable, and the bread tasted like cardboard. There was very little choice of cheese and sausages (there were some Costa Rican dishes, such as gallo pinto, but this is not the food we like to have for breakfast - we are Europeans and used to European food). The only good thing was the fruit: it was fresh and ripe.
So on the whole we were not dissatisfied with what we got, but in regard to the price we paid for the room it was not as much as we expected.
