Nice room, poor customer service

by Melissa E

My husband and I just returned from a Thanksgiving stay at the Footbridge Beach Motel. We booked Wednesday through Saturday morning. On the Monday before, the owner called to tell us he was going away for Thanksgiving, would be back on Friday, and would leave a key for us in the mailbox. He also asked if he could charge our card for the full amount, which we OK'd. We arrived on Wednesday afternoon and found the room to be clean, comfortable, and in excellent proximity to Footbridge Beach.

But - we were the only ones there until Thursday night. No other guests and no staff. The office was locked.
There was no housekeeping on Thursday, which we didn't expect as it was Thanksgiving. But we were starting to run out of toilet paper (only one roll in the bathroom) and kleenex (tiny boxes). There was only a single small bar of soap in the bathroom and a soap dispenser in the shower (the kind you see over sinks in a public bathroom). No shampoo, lotion, or any other items in the bathroom.

On Friday morning we hung out the "please service this room" sign and went about our day. We stopped back at the room a couple times during the day and the room still hadn't been serviced. At this point we were out of toilet paper and the soap was down to a little piece of mush. The waste baskets were full. I decided to investigate the nearby "coffee room" and found a screen door marked "employees only" leading to a storage area with.....toilet paper! Soap! Kleenex! I grabbed what we needed.

Then we noticed that lights were on in the owner's house next door. On my way over I slipped and fell on ice that had formed from a dripping roof over the patio area and parking lot. The office was still locked so I called the owner's cell. When I told him I had fallen, he said he would be out directly with some salt but that he "couldn't do anything" about black ice. He never asked if I was OK. He also didn't seem particularly bothered that I had to go scrounging for supplies ("I told you I was going to be away"). Keep in mind that he NEVER told me there would be no staff around and no housekeeping.
By way of "compensating" us for my fall, he offered a $50 gift card to a nearby restaurant which we couldn't use as we had already made plans with friends for dinner in the next town. He never offered to comp us a night or even give a discount.

Needless to say, we will not be staying at Footbridge Beach Motel again. We are experienced travelers and are not "high maintenance" or fussy. But this was the worst customer service we've had in many years.

Awesome Hotel and AWESOME Staff/Ownership

The entire experience beginning with reserving a room was exceptional. The website to book the room was super easy and clear to understand. You can actually pick the room you will stay in, and you can see the location of the room within the property. That is awesome, so it helps with people who want to be away from the main road, etc..
The rooms were EXTREMELY clean and well appointed. The art work in the rooms is fresh and appealing. The new HVAC systems was super quiet yet very effective. Bed was very comfortable as well. The pool area is awesome and a great place to hang with other guests. The hotel is pet friendly and has special rooms for pets. There is also an area for pets to "do their business".
The short walk to the beach, and several restaurants within steps of the property underscore the phenomenal location of this hotel. While it's not right in downtown, it certainly does not feel that way, and after spending the weekend at the hotel, I'd prefer this location.
The staff, including owners Mark and Scott are PHENOMENAL. The housekeeper Stephanie did a great job, I really was impressed by how clean and well maintained the entire property is, inside and out.
I look forward to returning several times each year.
