Much better than we expected

by Jim_B_10

This hotel is great. It's a complex of several different buildings and styles, all of which are older but updated. We stayed in a standard room on the second floor. The updated room and bath were both spacious with a nice dorm fridge and microwave and coffee station in the open closet area. The windows were covered with new plantation shutters, which I like much better than drapes. The bedding was simple and tasteful. TV was on the small side but that's not important to me. The bath was very nice with awesome walk in shower and lots of soft towels. The breakfast was above average for buffet with tasty pre-made omelettes each morning.

Another big plus is they are about 3 blocks walk to a very nice little beach on Neptune Place. Surf was a little rough and most of the time there was no life guard so you might thing twice before bringing small children there.

On the down side, the second day our room wasn't made up until after 5:00pm. Perhaps is was a very busy Sunday. And they didn't do a great job but it was good enough. Also, it took a long time to check in on Saturday. The guy ahead of us had two rooms and by the time he was done I thought he was buying a timeshare or something. But despite these two complaints we found the staff to be efficient, quite, nice, low key, and hard working. We'll definitely stay there again.

Disappointing stay

We stayed at Holiday Inn Express because of the close proximity to the beach and activities. It is an older hotel, but that didn’t bother me. We have stayed at this brand MANY times and are rarely disappointed. FIRST— the good news is it is a 7 minute walk to a FABULOUS beach and sunset (Landansea Beach) and as always the breakfast buffet has many options and was great. However, There were no towels at the pool and when we asked for some, they brought only 4 (teeny tiny) towels yet it takes 3 just to cover the chair so as to not get burned AND there were 6 people at the pool. They never brought more. The housecleaners were loud and raucous for many hours while we waited at the pool for a room. It didn’t seem anyone was in a hurry to get rooms ready. The pool loungers were super nice, with thick padding. We finally got our room only to find a 1+ inch crack under the door and light streaming in from the whole length of the side of the door. We stuffed towels under the door overnight and hung a sheet to cover the side crack. This is ridiculous that they haven’t attended to this issue. Nobody likes to sleep with light streaming in from the hall light that is on all night.
The rooms have exterior windows so folks walking by are often loud, but we turned a sound machine app up loud to block the noise. The desk lady on Sunday morning (9/8), was extremely unfriendly, not just to me, but to all the other folks that came in to check out. If you work in a customer service job, there is an expectation that you can be at least a little friendly. We would not stay at this hotel in the future.
