Recently completed a three night stay at this hotel. Based on the highly rated reviews here, we expected a great experience. Far from it. Our experience was nowhere near the four and a half stars shown. Let’s begin...
Made the reservation online through Hilton website and checked in online before arriving. As a result, we were not concerned about time of arrival. Getting there at about 10 pm after being out all day, we expected things to go smooth. Once at the front desk I was told I was not checked in, even though the Hilton website stated so after I selected my room. It was here that we received our first surprise. When presenting my card for approval, I noticed the total was about $100 higher than quoted online. I was told the hotel puts a hold on the card for the room rate plus 15% per night for any incidentals we might charge while there. I had never heard of this before and couldn’t figure out what we would possibly charge at a hotel that doesn’t have a restaurant. While there is a small sundries stand, I doubt it is frequently used by guests. In addition, I was told the hold would remain on the card for 10-15 days. Nothing about this was mentioned during the reservations process and it left a bad taste to start the stay.
After getting to our room, we noticed the temperature was warm, even though the setting was low. We also saw a big stain on the bedspread. Upon calling the front desk, I was told the thermostat turns the AC off when no one is in the room. I get trying to save energy but it’s a real inconvenience when you’re out and want to return to a comfortable room in the evening without waiting an hour for the room to cool down. We were not about to sleep in a bed with a stain on it so we requested a different room and moved. The second room felt even warmer, but we were tired and just wanted to get to bed, so we cranked the AC. I then noticed that the door deadbolt would not latch. Called the front desk again. After some time, a technician came and fixed it, but not before another 45 minutes had passed. Luckily, he was also able to adjust the AC so that it would stay on and keep the room cool. However, it was well after midnight before we were able to retire. We also had issues getting the TV to turn on every day we were there.
The next morning, complimentary breakfast was very disappointing. The food was definitely some of the worst I’ve had at a hotel. The orange juice tasted like water with orange coloring added and the egg “patties” had the consistency of hockey pucks. The only things that were edible were the cereals, fruit and obviously pre-made breads. So much for the “daily hot breakfast.” After that experience we chose to eat out. An added important note is that the evening “reception” is only offered Monday through Thursday, so we couldn’t experience that.
Other problems included dealing with noisy guests through paper thin walls, having to choke through smokers every time we went in and out of the hotel (even at the side entrance), and coming back to our room on our last day to find it had not been serviced, which required another call and wait to rectify.
Upon checkout we were met with another surprise - an additional $20 in local occupancy tax that was not quoted previously.
The only good thing about this hotel for us was the design of the room. It had a full size refrigerator in the kitchenette, which was convenient for storing drinks and getting ice without having to go down the hall. However more than that is needed for a good experience and this hotel failed significantly at that.
The other negative reviews are interestingly similar to our experience, so I don’t understand the other high ratings.
Would not stay here again.
Most of all the staff was helpful in every way. Hotel was excellent with great amenities (lobby, beautiful outdoor patio, tennis courts, great pool, good gym, and most of all great bed). One helpful amenity was the shuttle service all over the Charlottesville area.
