Dreadful Saturday night and zero follow up

by KCjoe_13

We booked a two night stay at the Intercontinental on the plaza for our newlywed son and his bride. The plan was for the two of them to go to the hotel Saturday after the reception and then spend Sunday there relaxing by the pool, have dinner on the plaza and go back to reality Monday.

Everything started fine, we dropped an overnight bag off for them around 2 pm and the desk said it would be waiting for them in their room when they arrived late that night.

At midnight when they arrived, the hotel could not find their reservation. When our son gave them the confirmation number, they finally after a long delay checked them in. But when they got to , the room was the room, instead of the plaza view king room they booked they had two queen beds. And no luggage! They called the desk to have the bag sent up, but the desk said that was not possible, no one was available, and it was locked up. At that point, being young travelers and exhausted they just went to bed.
The next morning they went down and got it themselves and went to the pool. We talked to them and they told us of the issue with the luggage. My wife then called the hotel and asked for the manager. Chris was the night manager, profusely apologized and said the hotel would send up an amenity that afternoon to apologize. When when the couple got back to the room after a wonderful dinner at Eddie V’s, no amenity and no housekeeping service either. They called and the night housekeeper cleaned the room. But never saw the apology “amenity”
After hearing all the details of the stay later that week, my wife called again and chris was again very sorry and credited us one night. Which was nice but all we wanted was for the hotel to apologize to the couple.
After a few more days of stewing my wife called and asked for the manager. After leaving three messages and talking to a very apologetic and kind telephone operator named Alisha no one ever called or acknowledged our concerns.

I travel all the time for work, Marriott Bonvoy platinum, Hilton diamond, and understand things happen . But the lack of any real follow up really irritated me. Later that week, I called the IHG customer care line, which was a disappointing experience in itself. After repeating the experience three different times to agents who kept accidentally disconnecting the call. I finally spoke with one agent who offered me 20k points to end the issue. I told them all, the only thing we wanted was for the hotel to reach out and apologize to the couple. Maybe invite them back for a do over.

The intercontinental was the grand dame of KC hotels. The place to have your social event, see the plaza lights. It has been nicely renovated but said to say its fallen victim to hotel mediocrity. This was a once in a couple’s life opportunity to have a special experience, instead it turned into a very poor experience that no one at the hotel (other than the switchboard operator) seemed to care about

Love this hotel!

This is our “go to” hotel in KC. The Plaza location is perfect, very walkable to high end retail and restaurants. Concierge staff is very helpful and accommodating as is the bell staff and front desk staff. The renovation of the hotel and rooms is beautiful. We only wish the bathrooms and concierge lounge had been completely renovated as have been the rooms and lobby areas.
