This former convent located in the heart of Oaxaca City was restored in 1976 and reflects all the finer details of the hotel’s former life, along with modern conveniences. The huge “lavaderos,” which looks like an outdoor chapel or stone gazebo, sits in one courtyard. It was restored for mere décor, but once was where the nuns from the convent washed clothes. The 18 stone sinks are still visible. Located only one block away from Santo Domingo, it is said that underground tunnels were once used by nuns and priests traveling between the church and convent.
Families will love to spend some quality time by the large outdoor pool, and the onsite restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel’s open air feel keeps things cool at night and the high ceilings in the guestrooms make the rooms feel even more spacious. For a luxurious stay with a bit of history, Quinta Real is the place for families to stay in Oaxaca.

There are 91 unique rooms at this Oaxaca hotel. Some of the rooms are interior and some are exterior, but all of the rooms surround a courtyard. The rooms feature one king or two double beds, a mini-fridge and wet bar area, coffeemaker, flat-screen television, laptop safe and air conditioning. The bathroom features a tub and beautiful ceramic tiled walls and floor. Complimentary bottled water is refreshed daily and cribs are available upon request.
If you're looking to do the tourist thing in Oaxaca, I couldn't recommend this place enough. It's within easy walking distance of all the famous restaurants and only a 15 minute walk from the local market and downtown area. The rooms were very comfortable and the pool area was perfect...
We choose the Quinta Real because of the location and history of the property. This is my third visit to this property over 22 years. While the rate has soared, precious little has been done to the guest rooms to justify the rate increase or to make them more comfortable. We have stayed at several Quinta Real properties and were quite impressed with the renovations at the property in Puebla, which is of a similar historic period. It is a shame that little has been done to upgrade the rooms in the Oaxaca property, especially the bathrooms.
We had three of the exterior rooms for the five nights of our stay. The room initially assigned to my sister had a spectacularly foul smell. After much duscussion, Management finally assigned her a different room that had inadequate air conditioning. This was eventually fixed. The rooms are quiet even though they faced the street.
Having said this, service was good. The staff was generally gracious and helpful. We did have the breakfast buffet included and it was quite impressive and delicious. We found the service both in the restaurant and the bar to be very attentive and excellent. The concierge was able to arrange a great tour guide for the two days we requested. The pool area is a pleasant place to while away a hot afternoon.
All in all, it is a shame that the pricing seems a bit off considering the quality of the rooms. There are now a number of well located boutique hotels in Oaxaca that should present a good alternative.
Families will love to spend some quality time by the large outdoor pool, which is surrounded by lounge chairs on a grassy area. A few tables with umbrellas also fill the pool courtyard. The pool is open from about 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and pool towels are provided.
This onsite restaurant serves a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner indoors or at several different al fresco locations situated in the hotel's courtyards. Highchairs are available in the restaurant, as is room service.
A bar can be found in the courtyard just off the lobby and there is also a bar by the pool.
