Very clean and friendly staff. Great location. Have stayed in a Barcello in Playa del Carmen and was happy there too. Possibly updating there bicycles would be a suggestion. The cycle instructor was friendly and helpful
My boyfriend and I (we are 48 and 50) highly anticipated our 7 day vacation to the Barcelo resort Mar 7-14, 2019.
Pros: small resort, easy to get around. Great location with a market and lots of shops and restaurants across the street from the hotel. Pool area and bathrooms kept very clean. Plenty of poolside loungers, shade and beach loungers available. No towel card...fresh towels were rolled up and put on loungers by staff in the morning. The weather, beach and sunsets were absolutely perfect.
Our ocean view room on the 11th floor (premium upgrade) was comfortable, fairly clean and the fridge was kept well stocked. Small balcony, but was okay for 2 people. Small bathroom and the water pressure was good and consistent.
We watched the evening entertainment 3 nights out of 7 and it was decent.
Most days there was a guy with a hawk around the resort keeping the small birds away.
Lots of fellow Canadian guests! Met some great American guests too!
No smoking on the resort unless you’re by the beach!
Wifi included in the premium package was good all around the hotel and grounds too.
Cons: Hit or miss service everywhere but the pool bar. Drinks were okay but having had upgraded to premium, you had to go to the premium lounge on the main level yourself to get premium drinks. Then...it was hit or miss if they had certain bottles. For example, Baileys for our morning coffee was anyone’s guess every morning. I think they hid the bottle every second day.
Food...well I’m not too fussy and I found the food to be mostly on the poorer quality side. We tried one a la carte restaurant...the Seafood one which is the pool snack bar by day and Seafood restaurant every second night or so. I ordered a bacon wrapped filet mignon done medium and it was served blue rare to me. We felt rushed while dining there and when I told them that my filet was not cooked, they offered me some coconut shrimp. I declined and went to the buffet then later ordered room service. Incidentally, some of my best meals were from the 24 hour room service menu which was included in our premium pkg.
The main buffet was small and they moved the toaster to a new location every morning to keep things different lol. The lunch buffet restaurant was okay...I ate a lot of chips and salsa ...again, rare burgers were served up. Just keep the meat on the grill a few minutes longer...problem solved! There was a self serve soft ice cream machine that was a highlight.
I got excited at lunch one day to see the cook putting frozen rib eyes thicker than 1/8 inch on the grill. Here it was 4 rib eyes frozen together...(insert eye roll).
There seemed to be a problem keeping food at the right temperature. Buffet food was lukewarm and often desserts were warm too. Yuck...
The hotel catered to the Mexican guests mostly. I had read that on a review and it’s true.
To sum it all up, I’d be hard pressed to stay at the Barcelo again, unless it was a deal too good to pass up.
